The long holiday is here again and the children are at home. Rather than see it as an opportunity to engage their children with something meaningful that will add value to their lives, some parents would prefer to send their children to summer coaching classes where they teach nothing extra than the same subjects they teach them in schools.
Frankly speaking, your child does not need summer coaching classes. This is their long holiday, and there is a reason the educational system recommended it for children. So, sending your child to these classes, is like overloading them with information they don’t need at the moment.
Long holiday is meant for travelling, tourism and visiting places of interest that will enhance the development of a child. Oh! I forgot that we are in Nigeria, where things are not the same as they used to be; a place where the take-home pay can hardly take anyone home. Sadly, many cannot afford the luxury of trips and travels. Needless to say, the insecurity challenges that is like a ghost lurking in the dark.
It will be highly recommended to engage your child with skill acquisition programme. Help them get a place they can learn new skills like tailoring, music, automobile mechanics, baking, soap making, app/web development, gaming, robotics, coding, graphic designing, hair fixing and barbing, make up and make over, art and craft, sporting etc. You can also do a random search on Google for suits your child.
Should I shock you? Those summer classes are “really” not meant to teach your child anything new, rather they are avenues for sniffing more money from your pocket. So, don’t play into their gimmicks, instead give your child what no one can take away from him. Help your child acquire new skill he can develop to maturity; something he can depend on in future, in a society gradually shifting from “Certificate Labour” to “Skilled Labour.”
