The domain of artificial intelligence remains a strongly interdisciplinary field that gathers several scientific areas such as law, philosophy, ethics, cybernetics, psychology, and neuroscience. Several trends are emerging from recent research developments in Artificial Intelligence, (AI).
As traditional computing approaches its limits around the world, Nigeria, not excluded, Quantum Computing promises to revolutionise how we process information, solve complex problems and enhance AI capabilities. Meanwhile, AI continues to transform industries, drive innovation and efficiency across various sectors. With this, experts are of the opinion that Nigeria should also embrace this technology, which represent the next frontier in technological advancement, offering unprecedented opportunities and challenges.
It is a scientific fact that as AI merges into the modern society, scientists have not been able to devise ways of fully controlling the AI device, including its ability to disseminate information. This is why the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), Lagos State Chapter, has urged the Nigerian Federal Government to involve experts in developing the National Artificial Intelligence Policy.
The Lagos Chapter President, Tokunbo Taiwo, made this call at the recently concluded 2024 Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) Conference. The event which held on November 21st and 22nd, 2024, at Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos, was organised in collaboration with the Lagos State Government.
It underscored the importance of experts’ input in shaping AI policies to ensure robust and effective governance. While acknowledging the Federal Government’s efforts in AI research, Tokunbo Taiwo also emphasised the need for professional expertise in the policy-making process.
He noted that there is a Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research, which he knows the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, is really working to ensure that it gets on the mainstream. He also added that the Special Adviser on Taxation and Revenue to the Governor of Lagos State, Abdul-Kabir Ogungbo, have remarked that the Sanwo-Olu-led administration is embracing AI as a powerful tool to improve governance.
Though this is encouraging, the point is, how are the young people being carried along, talking about structures being put in place on working effectively with Artificial Intelligence, (AI), in this day and age? Has enough information been spread on AI and its capabilities? Are the young people hoping to work more with AI to get the best for themselves and society, or the reverse is the case? More needs to be done in this aspect, to get every sector of the economy ready, as we hope to get the best from the AI device, in this day and age.
